Believe it or not getting a Sugar Glider for free is actually very rare. This probably means that if you do manage to get a free one, it is likely not under very ethical circumstances. Veterinarian offices are normally a great source for free Sugar Gliders as are wildlife rescue units and ranches that house exotic pets. That is if they are willing to adopt them out and if they even have any on hand. Australia is a different story and other native places to the Sugar Glider, as there is an excess of them.

While breeders do need express conscent to carry Sugar Gliders, mostly because of the financial issues more than moral ones, many gliders get left behind or found and returned to animal shelters.  In North America, this happens less often especially since these little guys aren't native to our soil.  In Australia, the term free sugar glider is actually a regular occurance. Sugar Gliders aren't on the brink of extinction mainly due to their ability to survive on very little and not much reliance on a fruitful environment. They can live in the desert and still survive longer than other animals.

When thinking of a getting a Sugar Glider, the free route is a difficult way to go and is rare.  Free is hard to come by these days, especially if you're in North America.  In fact, Sugar Gliders are very in demand and are one of the most popular exotic pets. Therefore, good luck trying to find a free one as a pet. Perhaps try the vet office or wildlife refuge before the pet store.

Best of luck! Please post any known ways or locations to find free sugar gliders so others have an opportunity to own one.
