There are hundreds of certified breeders in Australia. In fact, it is against the law to sell or breed Sugar Gliders without a permit. In North America it is a similar story, Sugar Gliders are deemed as exotic pets and as such could have only been brought through air travel.
Sugar Gliders reach sexual maturity quickly, males about 4-8 months and females slight after at 12-16 months. Baby gliders are called 'joeys' akin to kangaroos. Each litter normally yields 1-2 joeys occuring once to several times yearly.
Now that there are more breeders in North America, the breeding of Sugar Gliders is a little less regulated and monitored. Like any other animal is good to be cautious when buying a glider from a breeder. Make sure to ask to see their permit and to see where they are kept. In order to avoid health and/or behavioural issues, do not buy them from a market or off the street. Many pet stores are a good bet for finding quality Sugar Gliders and can provide you with diet, maintenance and cages advice. But be warned, they can be very expensive, they are exotic pets afterall!
Breeders can be found all across Canada and the United States, with particular emphasis on Vancouver BC, Victoria BC and the west coast of Canada. It is unclear why this area boasts the most breeders, however, the quality of their work seems to be favourable.
The best place to start if you are looking for a Sugar Glider as a pet is to visit your local pet store. Secondly, check in with local veteranarians who can likely recommend local breeders or even some stray Sugar Gliders that may have come into the clinic. They can also provide care advice and recommend whether it would make a good pet for your home,.
