It is recommended that feeding Sugar Gliders as pets should be the same as if they were still in the wild. Luckily, their diet is neither exotic nor expensive. Chicken and turkey will suffice for protein and meat, perhaps some crickets or small bugs as a snack and for 'vegetables' eucalyptus branches or supplement will do nicely.
A definite no-no for Sugar Gliders diet is any sort of dry pellet food or seeds. They have trouble digesting this type of dry food and it can severely damage their intestines and digestive tract causing pain. Stick to the basics and don't over indulge them. In fact, engaging them in play with their food is encouraged. Hide crickets and eucalyptus bits in their cage and let them hunt for it. This is also great exercise and will reduce the hyperactivity that they are known for significantly.
Not unlike many other small animals, the Sugar Glider can often suffer from calcium deficiency. To avoid this problem, feed them vegetables and fruit. The nector from suit fruits is very much enjoyed as well as small bits of brocolli, spinach and bell peppers. Some vets also advise that a small amount of flavoured yoghurt can deliver cacium and good-for-you bateria cultures to improved digestion.
Where to get Sugar Glider food?
There really isn't one golden rule. Suggestions include pet stores, exotic custom pet stores online, veterinarians or simply make it yourself. As mentioned, their diet is pretty simple and basic besides perhaps the bugs and eucalyptus so make your own concoction of small pieces of chicken and some samples from the pet store.
